●Construction

The Taj Mahal was built as a tomb for Shah Jahan’s favorite wife, Mumtaz Mahal, a Muslim Persian princess. She died while accompanying her husband in Burhanpur after giving birth to their 13th child.

●Architecture

The Taj Mahal is a rectangular structure with four minarets on the corners, a big dome with a lotus motif, and arched gates. The walls are decorated with carvings of Quran verses.

●Complex

The Taj Mahal is part of a complex that includes a mosque, guest house, main gate, and four minarets. The complex is set in formal gardens on the right bank of the Yamuna River and is surrounded by a crenellated wall on three sides.

●Inscriptions

The Taj Mahal’s south gateway and main mausoleum are decorated with Arabic inscriptions in black marble. The lettering is inlaid into white marble scroll-like borders.
