Fatehpur Sikri is a city in the Agra district of Uttar Pradesh, India, that was the capital of the Mughal Empire under Emperor Akbar:


History

Built between 1571 and 1585, Fatehpur Sikri was the first planned city of the Mughals. It was abandoned in the 1580s due to a lack of water, and the capital was moved to Lahore within 20 years.


Architecture

The city is made of red sandstone and features a variety of architectural styles, including Persian and Timurid. The complex includes palaces, mosques, public buildings, and living areas for the court, army, and servants.


Notable features

The complex includes the Imperial Palace Complex, the marble tomb of Sheikh Salim Chisti, and the grand mosque. The Buland Darwaza (Victory Gate) is a magnificent entrance gate that commemorates Akbar’s successful campaign in Gujarat.


Significance

Fatehpur Sikri is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and a prime example of Mughal architecture. The city’s architecture illustrates the diversity of religious and cultural identities that existed there.
