THE AGRA FORT
Agra Fort is a historical fort in Agra, India, that was the main residence of the Mughal emperors until 1638. It’s a UNESCO World Heritage site.
● Location:
On the right bank of the Yamuna river in Agra, Uttar Pradesh .
About 2.5 km northwest of the Taj Mahal .
● History:
Built by Emperor Akbar in 1565 on the remains of the ancient Badalgarh site .
The capital was moved from Agra to Delhi in 1638 .
Shah Jahan, the builder of the Taj Mahal, was imprisoned in the fort by his son Aurangzeb .
● Features:
•Red sandstone walls with bastions and curves .
•Two gates, the Delhi Gate and the Amar Singh Gate .
•The Hathi Pol, or Elephant Gate, which is the inner portal .
•The Musamman Burj, an octagonal tower with marble screens and carvings .
•The Jahangir Palace and the Khas Mahal, palaces built by Shah Jahan .
•The Diwan-i-Khas, an audience hall .
•Two mosques .
