THE ANGKOR WAT
Plex in Cambodia and the world’s largest religious monument. It is a symbol of Cambodia and appears on the country’s flag.
● Construction:
Built in the 12th century by King Suryavarman II
Originally a Hindu temple dedicated to Vishnu, one of the three main gods in Hinduism
Later transformed into a Buddhist temple .
● Location:
Located in the ancient Khmer capital city of Angkor
Protected by a 15-foot wall and a wide moat
A sandstone causeway provided the main access point to the temple .
● Significance:
A symbol of Cambodia
The best-preserved temple at the site
The only temple to remain a significant religious center since its foundation
A popular tourist site .
● Restoration:
Restoration programs were undertaken in the 20th century, but were suspended during the 1970s political unrest
Restoration efforts resumed in the mid-1980s and the temple was removed from the UNESCO World Heritage in Danger list in 2004 .
