THE PURANA QILA




Purana Qila, or Old Fort, is a historic fort in Delhi, India. It was built by the Mughal emperor Humayun and the Afghan ruler Sher Shah Suri. The fort is a testament to the contributions of both emperors.


History:


Excavations have found traces from the 3rd century BC . 

Humayun renovated the fort in 1533 . 

Sher Shah Suri renamed the fort Shergarh and added more structures to the complex . 

Humayun reclaimed the fort and restored its original name, Dinpanah . 


Location:


Located on Mathura Road, close to Pragati Maidan . 


What it is:


■A major fort in Delhi, India . 

■A tourist attraction, archaeological site, and museum . 

■A popular spot for picnics . 


What to see:


■A massive stone gate built by Humayun . 

■The North gate, also known as Talaqi Darwaza or Forbidden Gate . 

■Remains of different structures built of yellow quartzite . 

■A lake on the side of the fort .
