The pituitary gland is a small, pea-sized endocrine gland located at the base of the brain. It has two lobes: the anterior lobe and the posterior lobe.

The pituitary gland secretes several hormones, including:


Growth hormone (GH): Regulates growth


Prolactin (PRL): Stimulates milk production in the breasts


Adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH): Regulates the adrenal glands


Thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH): Regulates the thyroid gland


Follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH): Regulates the ovaries and testes


Luteinizing hormone (LH): Regulates the ovaries or testes


Oxytocin: Involved in childbirth and breastfeeding


Antidiuretic hormone (vasopressin): Stored and released by the posterior pituitary


Beta-melanocyte-stimulating hormone: Causes the skin to darken


Enkephalins and endorphins: Inhibit pain sensations
