There are multiple stories about the origin of the Ganges River in Hindu mythology:

Vishnu’s toe

In the Bhagavata Purana, Vishnu’s big toe pierced a hole in the universe’s covering, allowing the Ganges River to flow in. The water of the Ganges became pink after washing the lotus feet of Vishnu.

Daughter of Himavat

In the Ramayana, the Ganges was a celestial water body and the daughter of Lord Himavat, the king of the Himalayas.

Bhagiratha’s penance

In one story, Bhagiratha, a legendary king, brought the Ganges to Earth to bestow nirvana on his ancestors who were cursed by Sage Kapila. The Ganges flowed from Lord Shiva’s hair after he agreed to channel her flow.

The Ganges is considered a tirtha, or crossing point between heaven and earth. Hindus revere the Ganges as the goddess Ganga and consider it a holy river. The Ganges originates in the Gangotri Glacier in the Uttarkashi district of Uttarakhand and flows into the Bay of Bengal.
